Screenwriting 201 is to flesh out the outline first cracked in 101. The class is less academic and far more hands-on in its approach. With 101 focusing on concepts and big picture ideas of cinematic storytelling, 201 is about the actual words on the page. This is where you do the writing.
Screenwriting 201 is designed to commence the first draft of the screenplay from the outline created in 101. The class is less academic and more hands-on in its approach. With 101 focusing on concepts and big picture ideas of cinematic storytelling, 201 is about the the actual words on the page. It is a more writing intensive 8 weeks than 101.
Much of the class will involve the writing of sequences, story beats and scene work. Students will learn how to break down and rewrite a scene and sequence, control their own pacing and write in a way that allows the reader to "see" and emotionally respond to the film rather than just “read” it.
With students writing scenes or finalizing their outlines, weekly lectures are designed to apply directly to the projects in the class. Students will study screenplays rather than movies and these scripts will be chosen specifically to address challenges a student is facing from their own project. Because of this, each 201 session is different and taking the class multiple times is recommended and can pay huge dividends.
The class will put the student on a path to finish a solid first draft of their screenplay either during or shortly after the session closes.
