Story and Plot

Learning to Tell Better Stories for the Screen

STORY AND PLOT III: Short Films

Story and Plot II: Improving The Read is highly recommended.

This is an entirely new class designed to elevate the standard of short films developed and produced in Houston. This is less a how-to class and more of a development workshop. Like The First Draft, this workshop is designed so the participant writes a high-quality produceable script under the supervision and development of a professional writer.

The workshop with teach the student how to:
  • Tell a story rather than express an intellectual idea
  • Know when a story is worth telling
  • Create dramatic questions
  • Find dramatic conflict and obstacles
  • Create and exploit cinematic moments
  • Use structure to liberate rather than restrict storytelling
  • Find and utilize “the game” in comedy shorts.
This is an absolutely vital class for anyone interested in producing shorts in Houston. It is designed to immediately improve the work of all those involved. The class is combined with Story and Plot IV: The First Draft for two reinforcing perspectives on structure and scene design.
